| Dear Friend of Corbin's Children,
Researchers and educators have long known that a lack of
sufficient food can permanently affect a child's mental as
well as physical development. Hungry children simply don't
learn as well as children who are well fed. According to
Principals and Family Resource Center Coordinators in the
Corbin Independent School System, at least 25% of local
school children have little or no food from the time they
leave school on Friday until they return the following
Monday.
Our goal is to involve community minded business',
churches, civic organizations and individuals who would like
to join us to improve the lives of children in need.
For the 2008-2009 school year, a total of just over 12,000 bags of food
were placed in the backpacks of students in the Corbin City
School system and the surrounding areas. The Corbin
Community Backpack Program, a nonprofit organization, was
organized to ensure that no child in need in the Corbin area
schools would go without weekend food.
Thank you for visiting our website and for your
consideration of this project.

The Program Works Like This:
- Children in need are
identified by each school's Family Resource Center
Coordinator.
- Permission forms are
signed by parent(s) and returned to the Family Resource
Center.
- Participating children
stop by the Family Resource Center each Friday before
leaving school.
- A bag of food is then
placed in the child's backpack.
Each bag contains items such as the following:
|
| |
Individual Cereal Box
Crackers
Instant Oatmeal
Dried Fruit
Cereal Bar
Fruit Juice / Fruit Drink
Fruit Bar |
Easy Mac & Cheese
Pop-tart
Ramen Noodles
Fruit Cup
Cheese Crackers (No peanut products)
Pastries / Cookies
Cheez-it / Chips
Milk |
|
| The program is designed to ensure
confidentiality and anonymity of the participants. Since the
bags are placed in the student's packpacks before they leave
the Family Resource Center, students never have to be seen
with a food bag either in school or on the bus.
Our goal is to involve community-minded
businesses, churches, civic organizations and individuals
who would like to join us to improve the lives of children
in need.
